Adult ContemporaryやSleazybeats等、多くのディスコ、リエディット系レーベルからリリースをしているスコットランドのLord Of The Isles（ロードオブアイルズ）国内ではDJ Chida主催の”ene”からのリリースや今後9dwのCatuneからもリリースが予定されているなど、更に注目を浴びるLord of the Islesに国内初となるインタビューを行った。サウンドクラウドにアップされている最新Mixと合わせてどうぞ。

・あなた自身のバックグラウンドについてお伺いしたいのですが。出身はどこですか？
僕はスコットランド人で、ずっとここに住んでいるよ。アートとデザインを勉強する為にエディンバラに来て、それ以来ずっとここにいる。
>We’d like to know about a little background about yourself. Where do you come from?
I’m Scottish and I’ve lived here all my life. I came to Edinburgh to study art & design and I’ve stayed here ever since.
・サウンドクラウドでミックスを聴く事が出来ますが、これは地元のパーティでやったものですか？
soundcloud上にあるミックスは、色々なブログやウェブサイトの為に作られたものなんだ。ライブセットは、地元エディンバラのクラブ“デビル・ディスコ・クラブ”で録った時のもの。ライブセットを初めて披露したものだったんだけど、楽しいパーティーだったよ。
>Your mixes are on your soundcloud page: was it taken at your local party?
The DJ mixes were done for various blogs and websites. The Live set was recorded live a local Edinburgh club called the ‘Devil Disco Club’. It was the first time I’d done anything other than DJ, it was a good night.
・エレクトロニックミュージックのプロデュースを始めたのはいつですか？
機材で遊びはじめたのは1995年。
>When did you start to produce electronic music?
I started playing around with machines in 1995.
・あなたはこれまでに多くのレーベルからリリースをしていますね。反応はどうですか？
反応は良いと思うよ。個人的に尊敬してやまないレーベルが、自分の音楽をリリースしてくれる、その事にただハッピーだよ。
>You have already done the release from many labels. How is the response to your music so far?
OK I think? … I’m just happy to have labels I respect wanting to release my music.
・今後のリリースなどを教えてもらえますか？
次のリリースはUnthankレーベル（Firecrackerのサブレーベル）から2012年2月にリリースする予定。さらにベルリンのCocktail d’Amoreから出すEPの準備もしていて(ほとんど終わった！)、そしてもちろんCatuneからも。チダからもEne用に12インチとCDをと言われていて、これについて詳細はまだ決まっていないけど本当に楽しみにしているよ。いつ立ち上げるかまだ分からないけど、将来、Little Strong 02を計画しているよ。
>What is your plan for upcoming releases, labels, dates etc?
The next release is for the Unthank label (sub label of Firecracker) and is due February 2012. I also have EPs lined up for Cocktail d’Amore from Berlin (it’s nearly finished!) and of course Catune. Chida has also mentioned another 12” and a CD for Ene, which I’m really excited about but I have no details yet. I’m planning a Little Strong 02 for the future but not sure when this will happen.
・あなたはエディットもしますが、オリジナルトラックも沢山ありますよね。普段どうやって音楽を作っていますか？
エディットは私にとって本当に偶然だったんだ、ただ曲を書く為にいくつかのサンプルで遊んでいた。時々そのサンプルが構成の中心になったままで、そのトラックがエディットと呼ばれる様になったのかも。僕はいつもこのやりかたで曲を書いて、その上にメロディーを乗せ、たくさん新しい要素を追加しているよ。時々こんな風にトラックを始めて、最終的には完全にサンプルを削除している。大抵の場合はゼロから全てを自分で書こうとするけど、シンセで遊んでみてビートを作り始めるよ。シンセ音を作る事で、色々なインスピレーションが湧いてくるんだ。
>Although you also do edits, there are many original tracks. How are you making music usually?
The edit thing kind of happened by accident for me really, I was just playing with some samples to write music around. Sometimes the sample remains so central to the composition that the tracks could be called edits. In all the tracks I’ve done this way I’ve always written additional melodies and added a lot of new elements. Sometimes I start a track like this and then eventually delete the sample(s) completely. Most times though I just start from scratch trying to write everything myself, playing around with synths and constructing beats. My main inspiration in the beginning usually comes from creating a synth sound.
・どうやって名前とイメージを選択していますか？この名前を選んだ理由とは？
僕は常にスコットランドの歴史にある島の王の物語に興味があるんだ。僕は彼らがゲール人/ノルウェー人よりもスコットランドとイングランドのどちらからも独立していたという事実が好きなんだ、全くミステリアスだ。彼らは素晴らしい戦士やアーティストで、彼らがかつて支配したキングダム(スコットランドのウェスタン諸島)は、僕の意見では地球上で最も美しい場所の一つだよ。出来る限りそこに行く様にしている。インスピレーションを与えてくれる場所なんだ。僕の姓がマクドナルドという事が僕の決心を手伝ったよ。イメージはスコットランド一族についての本からで、その時の支配者・マクドナルドなんだ。
>How did you choose your name and image? What’s the story behind the picture?
I have always had an interest in the Lord Of The Isles story amongst Scottish history. I loved the fact they were separate from both Scotland and England more Gael/Norse and quite mysterious. They were great warriors and artists and the Kingdom they once ruled (Scotland’s Western Isles) is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I try and go there as often as I can. It’s an inspirational place. My surname is McDonald so that helped me make my mind up. The image is from a book about the Scottish clans and is a McDonald who was the Lord Of The Isles at that time.
・日本でDJ Chidaのレーベル・eneから”Pacific Affinity EP”がリリースされていますよね。どうやって彼を見つけたのですか？
サンフランシスコのThe Beat Brokerがチダに音を送ってみたらと提案したんだ、彼なら僕の音楽を気に入ってくれると思うって。
>In Japan, Your Pacific Affinity EP is released from DJ Chida’s ene records.How did you get to know him?
The Beat Broker from San Fransico suggested I send my music to Chida, he thought Chida would like my sound.
・(Pacific Affinity EPが)他の作品と比べるとストーリーがあって、エクスペリメンタルですよね。それについてはどう思いますか？
そのレコードに収録されている曲は多分5～6年前に書かれたものだ。(To & Froは別として）当初、皆気に入ってくれないんじゃないか、と思っていたんだ。チダはこれを最初に聴いた人だ。似た様な状況がUnthank のリリースでもあった。あれは自分にとって非常にパーソナルな音楽で、たぶん最も制作を楽しんでいる。模範的じゃないほどいいんだよ。何か特定の“音”だったり、スタイルが頭の中にある状態で、作業に入るのがあまり好きじゃないんだ。だから、もう既に形のあるものを再構築するリミックという作業を楽しめないんだと思う。作業の中で、一番費やすのが、曲の構想を考える時間なんだ、何も考えずに作業をして、いつも同じような音楽を作ることはしたくなくて。むしろ、色々試行錯誤をしながらも、自由で、自然で、自発的でいたい。実験的でいる事がこのアプローチの一環であると信じているよ。抽象的で、興味深い音にするのが好きなんだ。
>Comparing to your other works, Pacific Affinity seems to have a lot more story inside, and also very experimental piece. What do you think about it?
Most of the music on that record was written a long time ago, maybe 5 or 6 years ago (apart from To & Fro). I never thought anyone would like it! Chida was the first person to hear it really. A similar situation happened for the Unthank release. That music is very personal to me and probably the kind of music I enjoy making the most. The less prescriptive the better. I have problems writing sometimes if I get ideas of a certain ‘sound’ or style into my head. I think it’s this reason that I don’t really enjoy doing remixes. I spend most of my time working on design briefs so the last thing I want to do with my music is to work to a brief or make a conscience descision to write a certain type of track. I’d rather try and keep it free, natural and spontaneous. I believe being experimental is part of this approach. I like it when it sounds abstact and interesting.
・自身のレーベル”Little Strong Recordings”がありますよね。レーベルを始める決心は何だったのですか？他のアーティストをリリースする予定はありますか？
レーベルを始めたきっかけは、他のレーベルがリリースを見送ったトラックで、個人的には気に入っていたものを世に出したかったから。“Tell Your Soul”が良い例えだよ。次のLSRでは、地元の”Fake Left”とジョイントEPをリリースする予定。彼は本当に素晴らしいアナログミュージックをやっているよ。彼は自分のレーベル”iS Records”から2枚出している。
>You have own label Little Strong Recordings. What made you decide to start your own label? Are you planning to release other artists on LSR?
I decided I wanted to have an outlet for tracks I really liked that other labels had passed on. A good example of this is the track ‘Tell Your Soul’. The next LSR will be a joint EP with another local guy called ‘Fake Left’. He does really great analog music. He has two records out now on his own label ‘iS Records’.
・あなたはデザイナーと聞きました。あなたのデザインはどこで見る事が出来ますか？
いま自分のビジュアルワークを見せる為にサイトを作っているので、今度リンクを送るよ。これはLittle Strongの次のアートワークだよ。

・ではLord of The Islesの次の予定は？
更にリリースを行って、沢山ギグが出来る様に祈っているよ！4月にパリ、イギリスで2～3日プレイして、Cocktail d’Amore用のEPが終わったらベルリンでプレイする予定。
>So what’s coming up next for Lord of The Isles?
More music hopefully and fingers crossed more gigs! I’m playing Paris in April, I’ve got a couple of UK dates coming and I will play in Berlin once the EP is finished for Cocktail d’Amore.
